4. A gender-specific examination of migrants’ social situations based on SOEP and Microcensus data with a focus on the situation of people who fled

A great number of empirical studies lay bare how migrants live in comparatively more difficult social contexts, with a higher risk of poverty, inferior living conditions, worse educational prospects and less community inclusion. How migrants are integrated and positioned on the job market plays a central role with long-lasting consequences. Especially female migrants are not well positioned to enter the job market in a way that reflects their academic background and professional experience. Their participation in the labour market also varies strongly according to their ethnic backgrounds. Many girls and women in the current movement of displaced persons come from cultural contexts that would be described as ‘traditional’ when compered to Western countries. As such, there is a need for empirical analysis of how much and how well women with similar migrant backgrounds who have settled in Germany, have been integrated into the employment market. Integrating policies that promote equality and diversity is interdependent with social inclusion of female refugees in German society.

Research Questions and Methods

The study will strive to provide an empirical comparison of the integration of female and male refugees, and other migrant groups.

Data from the German Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP) on participation in the employment market, qualifications and integration in the employment market will be used to analyse the situations of asylum seekers and refugees who entered Germany between 1990 and 2010, and compare these with situations of other migrant groups.
